Chapter 18

A Flounder Promise

Squeezing the Mustang, Caravan, and Skylane into one hangar at the Saint Marys Airport was a bit like a four-million-dollar game of Tetris. It frightened me every time, but so far, we hadn’t scratched any paint. Perhaps a hangar expansion or acquisition was in my future. The investment would not only ease my nerves about denting airplane skins, but would also give us more room to comfortably maintain our seemingly ever-expanding air force.

When we pulled into the drive at Bonaventure, the Judge laid his hand on my shoulder. “I don’t know how to thank you for this morning, Chase. It was one of the grandest experiences of my life. I know it was just a common flight for you, but it’s important to remember that the things that appear simple and even meaningless to you may be the things that others see as remarkable and unforgettable. Don’t take these things for granted, son. The gifts God has given you—like that beautiful, faithful wife of yours, those friends you call a team, and this grand life you lead—are perishable if not protected, and the best way to protect them is to be thankful for them every day. I don’t mean just flippantly saying thanks. I mean devoting a part of every day of your life to meditating on how much they mean to you and how empty your life would be without them. Love those people with everything you have because even if you live as long as I have, life is fleeting. So many people and things are gone in the blink of an eye.”

I sat, staring back at the weathered skin of his face and the wisdom in his deep-set dark eyes. “Thank you, Judge…for everything. Especially for this morning with you.”

He nodded, patted my shoulder, and climbed down from the microbus.

The front entrance to Bonaventure felt far too formal for me, so I rarely used those doors, preferring instead to walk around the house and enter through the kitchen door from the back gallery. As I rounded the corner of the house, I heard the beautiful rumbling of a pair of big diesel engines coming from the dock, so I wasted no time jogging for the water’s edge.

“That sounds a lot better,” I said across the gunwale to Earl’s backside.

She peered across her shoulder with a look of satisfaction and pride. “That’s how they’re supposed to sound, but we’re gonna need to find a diesel pump. These things are thirsty, and the tank in my truck only holds a hundred gallons.”

“How big are the tanks you built?” I asked.

“The original pieces of crap I took out were thirteen hundred gallons each, but mine are upgrades. If my math is right, you’ll be able to carry almost twenty-eight hundred gallons.”

“Whew! That’s a lot of gas.”

“I done told you too many times, it ain’t gas. It’s diesel. Are you ever going to learn?”

“I know, old girl. I just do it to keep you on your toes. What
